On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Councilmember Jamie Gauthier introduced legislation to move forward the 47th Street Repaving & Traffic Safety Project.
As a reminder, this project (part of the larger 48th & 47th Streets Repaving and Traffic Safety Project) will:
Convert two-way vehicle traffic to one-way northbound between Kingsessing Avenue and Chestnut Street
Protect young students by improving and simplifying vehicle movements near St. Francis de Sales Elementary, Henry C. Lea Elementary, and Children’s Community Schools
Install a parking separated bike lane between Kingsessing Avenue and Chestnut Street
Add loading zones on neighborhood and commercial blocks to enable better access for deliveries as well as passenger pickup and drop-off
Modify curbside regulations around schools to improve the safety of student pick-up and drop-off
According to the project timeline published by the City, the plans will be finalized this Spring and the repaving and restriping of the street from Kingsessing to Chestnut will take place over the summer.
An annotated display of the entire length of the project can be seen at this location (Note: older browsers may not be able to resolve or enlarge the dynamic imagery smoothly.)
