Gardening Season Kickoff (virtual) Meetup: Learn to Prune from a Local Pro - Monday, 3/29/21 at 8pm

After a long cold winter, spring is here! GCCA Greening is kicking things off with a virtual meet-up. Please join us and tell share with your neighbors! Garden Court is made up of hundreds of individual front gardens and our hope is to meet up like this from time to time (someday in person!) as a community platform for sharing, self-help and, ultimately, community-wide greening. Meet-up log-in info is later in this post.

Daunted by pruning? We'll get you up to speed.

Shrubs and trees need maintenance to flourish, and spring is the right time to prune many species, but that can be a pretty intimidating task! Fortunately, we are blessed to have Kylin Mettler join us to conduct a training on how pruning works and when it should be done so you can make the best choices for your plants. Kylin lives on Osage Avenue; the staff at his business - Kylin Arts - designs, installs, and maintains residential gardens that engage the human soul, provide habitat and food for animals, and nurture the soil and plants. Kylin is committed to a people-, planet- and pet-friendly approach to horticulture that is aesthetically guided by a background in the arts and sculpture, in particular, which is especially great for shaping shrubs and trees. This is a training usually given to staff, so we are very grateful that Kylin will share tips of the trade with our community.

What to plant this spring? Get suggestions from Community Gardeners.

GCCA is the City's steward of the community garden on the 4700 block of Spruce Street. Its members are passionate gardeners who maintain their own plots and the plantings around the garden and tennis courts. At our meet-up, community gardeners will each share their favorite ideas for early season planting. Come get inspired!

Greensgrow West, 5123 Baltimore Avenue, is back to help you with what you need.

2020 was a hard year for everybody, including West Philly's own non-profit community garden center. We are excited to share that Greensgrow West has (re)opened (still with certain restrictions). For now, their hours are Thursday-Sunday, 10am-4pm. At this point, they are stocked with lots of vegetable and herb starts, with a more modest selection of annuals, perennials, and ground covers. (The chickens, however, are on vacation in Kensington, but are said to be returning soon.)
