A Delicious Tribute to a Beloved Community Member
Just published are a brand new softcover and hardcover edition of the book “Come Into My Kitchen” by Mary A. Allegra, former president of GCCA!
The published book came straight from the cookbook she wrote over many years and updated on her computer. The order of the recipes, the stories behind them, her sometimes emphatic directions, and the organization of the book are published completely unchanged. They are all Mary’s own words.
There’s a greatly expanded index, a loving forward from her granddaughter Claire, and a couple of photos including the one on the cover of Mary in her kitchen soon after she moved into her home on Cedar Avenue in 1983.
Here’s an excerpt from the very first recipe in her book under Soups: New England Clam Chowder . Coincidentally, this was the last meal Mary ever cooked before her sudden heart attack at the Jersey shore on August 20, 2019.
"My recipe for this dish is adapted from one used by my grandmother, Alice Mary Connelly-Perez. She never said where she got it, but her recipe is as authentic as you can get - it begins with the words, “Go to the beach and dig up about three dozen clams ....”
The books will be available for FREE as part of Curio Theatre’s fundraising effort later this summer. Curio Theatre was close to Mary’s heart and Curio is hurting in this COVID-19 world. So stay tuned for details on how you can get your free copy for yourself or as a treasured gift for others!
