Community Presence at the Lea School

GCCA’s Education Committee is poised to begin its seventh year of literacy tutoring at the Henry C. Lea School, a K-8 public school at 47th and Spruce Streets. So far, 18 volunteers have signed on for the new school year. Fifteen of them are returnees to

the program.

We’re coming off a very successful experience last year in which 19 tutors worked one-on- one with 23 first-graders. More than half of our tutees reached grade level by year’s end. All of the children made significant progress in reading.

This in-school tutoring program represents a year-long commitment of one hour a week. (There is significant flexibility, however, within this overall framework.)

Our tutors love reading and being with children. If you do, too, and can make time for a very special relationship, consider becoming a GCCA tutor. Contact Martha Ledger (mledgerx2@verizon.net) for program details.

We work closely with the school’s K-2 reading specialist, who provides materials and advises on best practices. An orientation workshop for new tutors will take place in September, and tutoring will begin in October.
