48th & Spruce Street
Business District Revitalization Project

Mark Mendenhall, Chair

In 2002 the Garden Court Community Association, through a strategic planning process, established the revitalization of the business corridor at 48th and Spruce Streets (and also on Pine and on 48th Streets) as an organizational priority. A core committee was organized and secured several grants – from Citizens Bank, the Department of Commerce of the City of Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development – to undertake a planning process for the improvement of the business district.

After several years of working with professional marketing consultants and urban design experts, and involving the community and business owners through surveys, meetings, and public meetings, the core committee developed a written revitalization plan for the business corridor that was completed in early 2006. The written plan can be viewed at the following link:

The core committee recognizes the need for professional corridor manager assistance to work on implementing the many worthwhile recommendations in the plan. It is working on ways to fund such a position and move forward.mailto:mr.mendenhall08@gmail.comhttp://www.bkurbandesign.com/downloads/gardencourt/gardencourt_feb2006_lo.pdfshapeimage_18_link_0shapeimage_18_link_1
